Siem Reap Washroom Toilet Project
In rural Cambodia, many people don't have a safe, private place to go to the toilet or wash. What this means in reality, is that everyday families have to head into the bush for their toileting, often in sight of others and regardless of weather conditions. For women and girls, this presents particular complications around hygiene, especially when menstruating.
The lack of proper toilets also leads to water-borne diseases.
Cambodia Clean Water & Toilet Project’s (CCWTP) purpose is to support the health and wellbeing of people living in rural villages in Siem Reap province, by creating access to clean water and sanitation. Without quality access to clean water and sanitation, children and families cannot maintain good health and are deprived of opportunities to attend school or find meaningful employment.

The Project
In January 2025, the Reece Foundation teamed up with CCWTP, Rotary Australia, and Build Your Future Today to build 16 washroom toilets for families in Siem Reap. Over two weeks, nine volunteer tradies from Australia got their hands dirty - digging, building, and installing the washroom toilets to give families a safe and private place to wash and go to the toilet.
The volunteers worked alongside a local crew to build the structures, providing privacy for its recipients.
Tradie talk – the technical detail
CCWTP have created a unique washroom toilet design that is suitable for the remote communities. It’s a two-tank septic system – one for processing sewerage and one for discharging clean water back into the environment.
Outcome
Across two villiages, 16 families now have access to a private space to wash and toilet, providing a sense of safety and dignity and reducing the risk of water-borne diseases.
