The Syada School WASH Project
For the Syada Village School in Nepal, there was a challenge to keep the doors open and deliver a quality education program. The school buildings were old, dark, and overcrowded. They were not child-friendly or earthquake resistant. Sanitation facilities were sub-standard and there was no space for playgrounds or classroom expansion.
The school was forced to re-locate due to its dangerous position amongst steep, landslide-prone and rocky mountains.

The Project
Adara Development have a long history of supporting people and schools in some of the remotest communities in Nepal. With the support of a Reece Foundation grant, the locally-led plan constructed gender-specific toilets and handwashing stations, and installed a new drinking-water system at the school.
To support the students, Adara delivered crucial education about the importance of handwashing, drinking safe water and keeping the community clean and waste free.
The Syada School kicked off 2025 with new buildings that are safe, well-lit and equipped with quality furniture. They are hugely optimistic that student learning outcomes will improve and that the children can hope for a brighter future. The new school structures are earthquake-safe and child-friendly, and there is plenty of space in the playground, all of which minimises the risk of disaster related injuries.
And with new toilet facilities and access to quality drinking water, the school expects to see improvements in long-term health and wellbeing for children and their staff.
