“Let’s Get Tanked!” Project
Lung Ho village is close to the Vietnam-China border in the Tonkinese Alps and is home to around 150 Hmong families living a subsistence farming life. The terrain in this part of the world is treacherous and farming is difficult due to the rocky terrain, low levels of top soil and lack of water during the dry season.
In the wet season villagers collect drinking water in 20 litre tanks from their roof daily. But in the dry season, they walk up to 5km every day to collect water from small, naturally formed pools in the rock. The pools become increasingly contaminated with mud and algae as the dry season progresses. As the pools dry up the villagers are forced to walk further and further.

The Project
Community Against Poverty is a Tasmanian based charity whose mission is to support vulnerable communities in Australia and Developing Countries. They do this by delivering grassroots projects directly to people who need it most. Combining their amazing fundraising efforts, and backed by a Reece Foundation Grant, they developed a plan to distribute and install 1,500 litre stainless steel water storage tanks to 55 of the poorest families in the region.
With the hands-on support of local people, tanks were placed next to the house and will fill during the wet season. This community-led solution will provide sufficient drinking water for much of the dry season.

The Outcome

55 families
received a 1,500-litre stainless steel water tank

350 people
now have access to clean drinking water in their home.

5km walking
is the burden now removed to access water.
